Area Overview

Understanding Laguna Phuket

Laguna Phuket has a character that is immediately recognisable once you enter the area. Unlike many parts of Phuket that grew gradually around local roads, villages or established town centres, Laguna was developed as one connected destination, bringing hotels, lagoons, golf, landscaped green space and the Bang Tao coastline together within the same setting.

The difference is visible in the way the area is laid out. Roads curve around water and mature planting rather than following a conventional street grid, while lagoons appear repeatedly between hotels, gardens and quieter internal roads. For hotel guests, shuttle buses and lagoon boats provide another way to move between participating resorts and shared facilities.

The result is an environment with a rhythm of its own. Some parts feel closely connected to the beach, others are shaped more by water and greenery, while areas around the golf course have a quieter, more open character.

A Landscape That Was Rebuilt

The landscape seen today has a history that is easy to overlook.

Before Laguna Phuket was created, this land had been heavily affected by tin mining. In 1984, the founders acquired 222 hectares at Bang Tao Bay on the site of an abandoned mine and began a long rehabilitation process. The acidic soil was treated and more than 7,000 trees were planted as the land was gradually restored.

That history helps explain why water and greenery are such strong elements of Laguna today. The lagoons are not simply decorative features added around the resorts. They sit within a landscape that was extensively repaired and reshaped over time.

Seen from above, the relationship becomes much clearer: water, internal roads, mature vegetation, golf and the coastline all form part of the same larger setting.

The Beach Is Only One Part of Laguna

Laguna stretches along approximately three kilometres of Bang Tao Beach, giving the western side of the destination a strong connection with the Andaman coast.

But Laguna is much larger than a beachfront strip.

Some parts sit directly behind the coast, while others extend inland around lagoons, green spaces, the golf course and quieter internal roads. Moving only a short distance within Laguna can therefore change what you see and how the surroundings feel.

A location closer to the beach may have a distinctly coastal atmosphere. Around the lagoons, water and landscaping become more prominent. Further inland, the golf course and wider green spaces create another character again.

This is why knowing that somewhere is simply “in Laguna” does not tell the whole story. The exact part of the area matters.

Moving Around Within Laguna

One of the more distinctive features of Laguna Phuket is the way movement has been considered within the destination itself.

Hotel guests can use complimentary shuttle buses and lagoon boats to travel between participating resorts and facilities. Current Laguna information lists both services as part of the internal transport system, alongside walking, running and cycling routes through the area.

This does not make Laguna completely car-free. The destination covers a large area, and everyday life can still extend beyond its boundaries. School journeys, larger shopping trips and travel elsewhere in Phuket remain part of the normal road network.

What Laguna offers is something slightly different: once inside, there are more ways to move between different parts of the area than in most places on the island.

Everyday Life Goes Beyond the Hotels

Hotels are the most visible part of Laguna Phuket, but they are only one part of what happens inside the destination.

There is an 18-hole, par-71 golf course, restaurants, wellness facilities, walking and cycling routes, green spaces and Canal Village, which includes shops and practical services. Laguna also hosts regular sporting and lifestyle events throughout the year.

This gives the area a daily rhythm that extends beyond people arriving and leaving a resort.

The surroundings outside Laguna also become part of everyday life for anyone staying here for longer. Around the main entrance, restaurants, cafés, supermarkets and services continue into the wider local area, creating a noticeable change from the quieter, landscaped environment inside.

That contrast is part of the experience rather than a weakness of it. Laguna has its own internal world, but it does not function in isolation from the rest of Phuket.

A Landmark Within Phuket’s West Coast

Laguna Phuket has grown into one of the most established large-scale destinations on Phuket’s west coast. Its scale is part of what makes it different: the official site describes more than 1,000 acres of parkland and beachfront, together with a three-kilometre stretch of Bang Tao Beach.

Yet even within that scale, there is no single Laguna experience.

The beachside areas, lagoon surroundings, golf course and quieter internal roads each create a slightly different version of the same destination.

Lifestyle & Atmosphere

Laguna does not feel the same from one end to the other. The beach, lagoons, golf course and quieter internal roads each bring a different atmosphere, while the landscape remains recognisably part of the same destination.
